German Center for Research Innovation (DWIH)

The DWIH New York was opened on February 19, 2010, and the DWIH San Francisco began operations on April 29, 2022. They are two of six German Centers of Research and Innovation (DWIHs) worldwide and part of the German government’s Strategy for the Internationalization of Science and Research.

Mission

The German Centers for Research and Innovation (DWIH) represent German science, research and innovation. They increase the visibility of German innovation leaders, impart knowledge, and advise and connect actors from Germany and the host countries.

Information, advertising and marketing

The DWIH offices in New York and San Francisco provide information about the German science, research and innovation landscape and advertise Germany as a land of research, including the opportunities it provides for funding and cooperation. To this end, the DWIH uses a wide range of event formats and targeted public relations work. These focus on collaboration with scientists and their research institutions, support for cooperative ventures in the area of basic and applied research, and funding of innovation in all areas of science.

Exchange and networks

The DWIH regards itself as a forum for exchange, bringing together German and international representatives of science and research-based companies. Networking between actors from Germany and the respective host country is facilitated, for example through lecture series, summer schools, pitch and matchmaking events, and joint training courses.

Service and advice

By providing advice and other services, the DWIH supports concrete collaboration projects and brings scientists from Germany and the host countries together. As a one-stop shop, the DWIH offers comprehensive advice to young and top-class researchers alike, as well as to research-based companies. The actors can also take part in and help shape events.

Under the leadership of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the DWIH receives its funding through the German Federal Foreign Office’s Research and Academic Relations Initiative. Additional designated partners are the alliance of German science organizations and the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce.
