Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

Canada's Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are part of a prestigious new program to attract and develop the world's best and brightest postdoctoral researchers in Canada.

The new fellowships will be valued at CAD$70,000 per year (taxable) for two years. Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens are eligible to apply. The program will be delivered by the three federal granting agencies: the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). CIHR will administer the program on behalf of all three agencies. Unlike the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, candidates are not required to be nominated first by a Canadian institution and recommended by the institution to the federal granting agencies for an award.

Candidates for a Banting Fellowship must demonstrate, beyond the excellence of their research, synergy between their research program and their host institution. As such, applications must be completed in full collaboration with the host institution. The deadline for candidates to submit a complete electronic application, including referee assessments, is November 3, 2010. International applicants must hold their fellowships at a Canadian institution. Canadian applicants who completed their degree at a Canadian institution may hold their fellowship at a Canadian or foreign institution.

Information regarding federally-funded scholarships are listed on Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade's (DFAIT) International Scholarships website at www.scholarships.gc.ca.

An Important Anniversary for DAAD

This August marks the 60th anniversary of the re-establishment of the German American Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) after World War II. On August 5th, 1950 DAAD was relaunched under the direction of the rector of the University of Bonn. With this achievement, German universities broke the political and moral isolation of the devastating Nazi regime and moved to revive international cooperation.

In fact, before the Second World War, DAAD had already been promoting international research and exchange, thanks to vision and initiative of Carl Joachim Friedrich, a student of political science at the University of Heidelberg. Friedrich, who had studied in the US in the early 1920s, managed to partner with Institute of International Education (IIE) to create fellowships for students of political science. In 1925, this vision was greatly expanded upon by establishing the Akademische Austauschdienst (AAD) (Academic Exchange Service), an early version of today's DAAD.

The small budget that DAAD had in the early post-World War II years was just enough to fund 300 students and interns. Since then DAAD has been funding nearly 70,000 German and foreign students and scholars annually and a total of over 1.5 million Germans and foreigners--a fact that bears the markings of a true success story!

Call for Proposals: Promoting German and European Studies in Canada - Round 5

In December 2006, DAAD launched a new program for the support of German and European Studies at Canadian universities. As part of our plan to continue and expand this program, we are pleased to announce the fifth in a series of annual calls for proposals. Funding is available for a number of different projects including, but not limited to, lecture series, research visits and joint transatlantic programs.

We invite students and faculty from Canada and Germany to submit proposals.

The submission deadline is October 1, 2010.

Go to http://www.daad.org/page/german/ to download the complete call for proposals and detailed guidelines for submission.

The Results of the EU- Canada Program Call for Proposals Are In

In 2009, the European Union - Canada Framework for Co-operation in Higher Education, Training and Youth (EU-Canada Program) launched a call for proposals to fund joint degree or study/training programs allowing transatlantic exchanges between European and Canadian education institutions.

The activities funded by this program include the development of curricula, joint study programmes, international internships, exchanges and study abroad with provision for mutual credit recognition and language and cultural study with a focus on transatlantic interactions to benefit to higher education students, vocational education and training learners and teachers/trainers/administrative staff.

This call was open to higher education institutions and vocational education and training institutions. Each project required one lead institution (an institution of higher educatin or training institution) in the EU and an lead institution in Canada, responsible for submitting the common proposal and for the management of the project. Consortium-led projects were encouraged if the consortium was composed of at least four institutions in total – i.e. two from the EU and two from Canada.

Out of 33 proposals, 10 were approved. Three of the selected projects will be supervised by German institutes of higher education. Germany leads the other EU nations with the highest number of projects that it will oversee. Romania came in second with two projects. Finland, France, the Netherlands, Ireland and Spain will each oversee one project.
The University of Freiburg was the only university that was successful in acquiring a Transatlantic Degree Partnership (TDP). The University of Magdegburg and the Free University in Berlin achieved successful results with Transatlantic Exchange Partnerships (TEP).

Additionally, Goettingen University has partnered with a Romanian institution of higher education to lead one of the winning projects.

Professor Sabine Kunst Elected New DAAD President

On July 1, Professor Sabine Kunst assumed office as the president of DAAD. The representatives of the 232 DAAD member universities and 123 member student bodies elected Sabine Kunst the organisation’s new President by a large majority at their Members’ Meeting in Bonn. Fifty-five-year-old Prof. Kunst succeeds Professor Stefan Hormuth, who died in February. She is the first woman to head DAAD.

Sabine Kunst studied biology and political science at the University of Hanover from 1972 to 1979 and, also at Hanover, hydraulic engineering from 1979 to 1982. In 1982, she completed her doctorate in environmental biotechnology with a concentration in the field of civil engineering and surveying. In 1990, a further doctorate followed on the field of tension between technology assessment and interdisciplinarity. In the same year, she qualified as a university lecturer (the German “Habilitation”) at the University of Hanover. She gained a wealth of international experience thanks to numerous research stays throughout the world (including China, South Africa, Mexico and Brazil).

Before being elected

President of the University of Potsdam in January 2007, Prof. Kunst had been working as Vice-president for Teaching, Studies, Further Education and International Affairs at the University of Hanover for two years.

Sabine Kunst has already been supporting international co-operation in research and higher education for more than two decades. She has been a member of the DAAD Board since 2008 and is also a member of numerous national and

international bodies.

Bologna Process Creates Network for Information and Promotion

Since its inception in 2006, an official Bologna working group has elaborated an external Bologna strategy, identified key activity areas and, more recently, helped devise the Bologna Policy Forum, where EU Ministers meet their counterparts from all over the world.

This year, the third-generation working group has taken up its work, now under the name of global openness. One of its tasks is to set up a network of national representatives from the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) to prepare joint action for the promotion of European higher education worldwide and the presentation of information on the Bologna Process elsewhere in the world.

At a meeting in Vienna at the end of May, the Information and Promotion network took up its work. Its three chairpersons are Hubert Duerrstein, the CEO of the Austrian Exchange Service, as well as Magalie Soenen and Heli Aru, of the Flemish and Estonian ministries of education, respectively.

A Transatlantic Program for Young Technology Leaders

The German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest (GACCoM) is pleased to introduce the successor to their prestigious Transatlantic Program, "Transatlantic Program - Young
Technology Leaders" (TAP-YTL). The program, which takes place under the auspices of Dr. Klaus Scharioth, German Ambassador to the United States, will bring together 12 young leaders with technical backgrounds for an intensive 8-day visit to Germany that will be focused on a specific theme. The first delegation, "Sustainable Architecture & Urban Planning" will take place September 19-27, 2010.

The 2010 program will provide participating young leaders with an opportunity to meet top innovative thinkers, architects, and technology providers that will enhance their professional development and enable them to witness first-hand Germany’s leading role in crafting new communities and energy efficient spaces for living and working. Delegation
members will see Europe’s largest urban development project “HafenCity,” in Hamburg, EU Green Capital 2011, experience Passive House technology and visit Germany’s most sustainable neighborhoods.

The agenda will consist of theme-focused site-visits, presentations and personal interaction with innovative companies, networking functions with peers and industry leaders, cross-cultural training and language building. Destinations include cutting-edge sustainable architecture and urban planning hotspots Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Freiburg.

The application deadline is June 16, 2010.

The overall goal of the program is to bring future decision makers from the US and Germany together at the beginning of their professional careers or late in their studies, to build networks and promote know-how transfer through intensive, content-driven encounters and experiences. Applicants must be from the field relevant to the focus of each trip, interested in modern Germany and have a basic knowledge of the language. One of the key aspects of the program remains to promote professional development within a transatlantic mindset through alumni activities. Future TAP-YTLs will feature topics such as "Logistics & Transportation" and "Water Management."

Please visit www.transatlanticprogram.org for further details and application requirements or contact Daniela Daus at daus@gaccom.org or (312) 494-2177.

German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award

First granted in 2008, the German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award provides winners with paid expenses for attending the AATG / ACTFL Annual Meeting in Boston from November 19-21, 2010 (registration, travel and lodging), and a Goethe-Institut professional development course in Germany in summer 2011 (course fees, airfare, and room and board). This year, three awards will be granted.

The German Embassy would like candidates who are up-and-coming German language teachers, who perhaps have not had other awards and accolades or have received only local
recognition, but for example, have saved a German program, are considered terrific teachers, and contribute to the local chapter.

Each AATG chapter may nominate one candidate for this award. Nominations may also be submitted by FachberaterInnen, Goethe-Institut colleagues, and German consulates in the
USA. The candidate may come from any level of instruction. Members who have been nominated for a separate AATG award this year (the Outstanding German Educator, Friend of
German, or the Certificate of Merit award) are not eligible. Candidates must be AATG members.

Nomination materials must be received by June 30, 2010.
