Eligibility Requirements |
|
|
|
|
- Graduating seniors (fourth-year students in Canada), graduate students, and recent graduates who have completed their Bachelor's degrees no longer than six years before the application deadline are welcome to apply. Students who are in the first year of a full Master's degree program in Germany may also apply to fund their second year of the Master's programs.
- Applicants in all academic fields are welcome to apply. For study in the fields of dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine, contact DAAD.
- If you are a graduating senior (last year of undergraduate studies)or a graduate student, you must be enrolled full-time at an accredited university at the time of application. (Those who have already completed an undergraduate degree do not need to be currently enrolled.)
- Applicants should be US or Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Foreign nationals must have studied at an accredited US or Canadian university for at least two years by the time of application.
- At the time of application, Applicants must not have been resident in Germany for more than one year.
- Applicants are requested to have a well-defined study project that makes a stay in Germany essential. Preference will be given to applicants who have been invited by a faculty member at a German university to study at a particular university department.
- Applicants in the arts, humanities and social sciences should have a good command of German.
- Applicants may not hold a DAAD grant and a grant from another German or German-American organization/German-Canadian organization concurrently for the same project. Prior recipients of a DAAD grant should contact DAAD New York before applying to determine their eligibility status.
- Study scholarship holders are required to complete two courses per semester and obtain "Scheine" for them.

|
- Graduate study scholarships are granted for one academic year (10 months) with the possibility of a one-year extension for students completing a full degree program in Germany.
- Scholarships must take place during the German academic year (October 2011 to July 2012).
- A very limited number of scholarship holders who receive seven- to 24-month grants may be awarded a two-month language course grant.This language grant is decided upon by the independent selection committee and does not require a separate application
- Monthly stipends are approximately €750. DAAD will cover health insurance and provide a flat rate subsidy for travel costs. In addition, limited funds are available for a rent subsidy and family allowance.

Application Guidelines |
|
|
|
|
- Check if your university is a DAAD Partner University by clicking here.
- If your university is a DAAD Partner University, contact your designated DAAD campus coordinator. All materials should be submited to your coordinator before your university's deadline.
- If your university is NOT a DAAD Partner University, send your application directly to the DAAD New York office. Do NOT send any materials to the DAAD Bonn office.
- The application form must be completed online.
- Please disregard the "Information regarding your application", the last page of the online application. The information relevant to your application is the following as well as the instructions DAAD New York provides in the Online Application Guidelines and the Instructions for Completing the DAAD Online Application.
- Collate, but DO NOT staple, each copy of the application in this order:
1. Signed Application Form
2. Supplemental Form (For music, fine arts, dance only)
3. CV/Résumé
4. Study Proposal
5. 2 Letters of Recommendation
6. Evidence of Contact with German Institution

8. Transcripts
- Submit a total of FOUR copies (1 original, 3 photocopies) of all the above application materials. You may open your official transcript to make photocopies of it. Exception: You may submit just ONE of each of your original, sealed recommendation letters (i.e. no photocopies needed of recommendation letters).
DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH PART OF THE APPLICATION:
1) Application Form - Fill out the online application form. Please answer all questions on the form completely. Do not fill in any blanks with the phrase "see attached," even if you must refer to additional material. Do not forget to sign the printout of your application.
2) Supplementary Materials - Applicants in the field of music must submit supplementary application materials (see Study Scholarship for Artists and Musicians)
3) Curriculum vitae or résumé - in chronological/tabular form. Narrative/paragraph-form CVs are not acceptable. Your name should appear on each page.
4) Study Proposal -
You may apply for funding for a Master's program OR a period of independent study. Master's applicants should have either been admitted to a German host institution for the desired degree course or be able to prove that they have established contact with a host institution. Proposals should explain why a particular program has been chosen and how it will further the applicant's educational and career goals. Independent study applicants should have a well-defined study or research project that makes a stay in Germany essential, and should have an invitation from an academic partner at a German university or research institution. The proposal (excluding references) should be not more than five to six pages in length, double spaced. Your name should appear on each page. Independent scholars are expected to complete two courses per semester and obtain "Scheine" for them.
5) Letter of Recommendation - Submit two original letters of recommendation printed on university letterhead, from professors at North American institutions in your field of study. Referees have the option of using the recommendation form available at www.daad.de/deutschland/download/03118.en.html (referred to as “Reports on scholarship applications”) though it is not mandatory. The form gives a general outline of the points that selection committees expect to find in a recommendation. Recommendations must include an original signature, and enclosed in a sealed envelope. You should submit these with your application package; if your referee prefers not to give them to you or you do not receive them by the deadline date, you may have them sent to the DAAD New York office directly. In some circumstances we would accept faxed letters.
6) Evidence of Contact with a German Institution - Your application will be greatly advantaged if you can provide evidence of any existing contact, or attempt at establishing contact, with academics at your chosen German host institution. It is not necessary to translate the letters of invitation from German faculty. Unfortunately, e-mail cannot be accepted as an official letter of invitation, but may be submitted for reference.
7) DAAD language evaluation form (Sprachzeugnis) (click here to download) - This document should be signed by a faculty member of the German Department at your institution. Even if your German skills are very limited, be sure to submit this certificate. We cannot accept Fulbright forms nor can we accept evaluations from teaching assistants.
8) Transcripts - Submit official transcripts of all post-secondary studies, including explanations of the grading systems. You may submit one official copy and three photocopies of each transcript.
Please keep a photocopy of the completed application and this Information Sheet for your records.
No reasons for decisions will be given.
Application forms and all supporting material remain with DAAD. Upon request, DAAD will return slides, tapes and drawings to applicants in the fine arts and music. Personal data of applicants and grantees will be stored electronically in DAAD’s computer files only to the extent necessary for the administration of the applications and scholarships in accordance with the German Federal Data Protection Act. Data will be provided to the respective International Student Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) for successful applicants when necessary to administer the scholarship and provide the scholarship holder with guidance services. Applications of unsuccessful candidates will be destroyed after one year.
